Why...

So, I chose to study Japanese simply because I feel that if I was dropped anywhere in Asia 2 months ago, I would absolutely no idea what was going on and probably end up somewhere I shouldn't/wouldn't want to be. Europe would be no problem, I have taken 3 years of Deutsch, 3 years of Nederlands, and 3 years of Latin. I have absolutely no idea where to start with any Asian language, be it Tagalog, Chinese, Korean, Japanese. My closest friend and room mate is from Tokyo, I enjoy anime and Japanese cult films as much as any other American Teenager. However, my real fascination with Japanese culture stems Edo period architecture and the current fashion industry there. In addition, for some unknown reason, I have always found the angle of the arc of a katana very beautiful. From a utilitarian standpoint, Chinese would probably be more useful for me to learn (I have more friends that speak Chinese, the Chinese economy is growing exponentially while the Japanese is apparently slowing, etc... I may even be taking this class to attempt calligraphy, at the very least mimic it. I am excited to be able to have some semblance of a conversation with my room mate and his father. The hardest part of this course for me will be learning the alphabets/kanji, the grammar seems extremely logical so far. All in all, I'd like to travel to Japan soon, and I do not wish to make a fool of myself while there, so instead of starting from scratch at the eleventh hour, I'll start now.
